Tesla Optimus, also called Tesla Bot, is Tesla's humanoid robot program. The current baseline is that Tesla is installing first-generation Optimus production lines after converting Fremont space previously used for Model S and Model X, with a second Optimus site still in construction at Gigafactory Texas.
Tesla's Q2 2026 shareholder update said construction at Fremont began after those vehicle lines were decommissioned, first-generation lines are being installed, and production is anticipated later in 2026. Initial builds are designated for Tesla's internal Optimus Academy for training-data collection and further functionality development, not customer shipments. On the July 22, 2026 earnings call, Elon Musk said production would start soon but warned that scaling will be unusually hard: there is no established humanoid-robot supply chain, many parts are new or in-housed, and the early manufacturing S-curve will be flat and long.
